Injectable Fillers are the Way to Go
December 15th, 2010 by alissa
Silicone/saline breast implants, fat transfer, the Brava Bra or injectable filler – let’s be honest, if it were up to me, I’d definitely go for the injectable filler to increase the size of my boobs.
I admit it: I’m a wimp when it comes to surgery. I do not want to endure the surgery or the extensive recovery afterward, even though it’s currently the most effective way to get bigger boobs. There are just too many things to worry about, related to the surgery and the anesthesia.
As for fat transfer, there’s still much needed improvement on the technique and it’s not readily available anyway in Toronto.
And the Brava Bra – simply a cruel torture device that is best reserved for masochists who just want a small increase (let me know if I’m wrong).
So that leaves me with the “boob jab”, aka Macrolane. And I’m not alone – apparently a number of informal surveys have found that the majority of women interested in breast augmentation would opt for this injectable filler, too. Sure, it only lasts for about a year and has its risks (lumpiness and leakage), but the thought of a nonsurgical procedure that involves an injection alone to achieve bigger breasts is a great concept. I’m all about noninvasive!
Unfortunately, it’s only available in the UK and Europe right now. I wonder if the folks at Health Canada will approve it?

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation
November 1st, 2010 by alissa
Plastic surgeons are warning that breast augmentation using transferred fat may not be a “two-for-one” solution for those who want to get a bigger bust and slim down at the same time. The technique also requires more research before deeming it “safe” and “effective” for the public.
While breast augmentation with implants is still considered the safest and most effective method, the fat transfer technique is currently being improved upon to make it a viable alternative. One improvement is injecting the fat into the fat of the breast, instead of into the tissue as was once done.
The benefits of this procedure over regular implants are results that may last longer and look more natural. However, complications such as the formation of cysts and fat necrosis still remain despite improvements to technique. Patients also typically require multiple procedures to achieve a desirable result in order to reduce the risk of complications occurring and for the body to accommodate the newly transferred fat. The amount of fat transferred from one part of the body to another is also not a lot, which means it won’t make a significant difference in the donor area (which is why it’s not a “two-for-one” solution, unless you only need a small amount removed from the to make a difference).

Foods that May Help Boost Your Bustline
July 4th, 2010 by alissa
Eat your way to a bigger bust…kind of.
The only way to dramatically increase the size of your breasts is by breast augmentation. That’s it. There are no miracle creams, lotions or pills that you can take to help your bustline (or at least not approved by the FDA or Health Canada). However, folk remedies and alternative medicine have pinpointed some foods that can help. If you want to go the nonsurgical route, try some of these foods (then let us know if they actually worked!) And even if they don’t work, you’ll still experience benefits since they’re all part of a healthy diet.
Soybeans
Soybeans are rich in isoflavones (genistein, daidzein, and glycitein), a substance that can act in the same way as estrogen – the hormone that plays a large role in breast development. The food has also been found to lower the risk of breast cancer.
Papaya
The juicy exotic papaya is believed to be one of the top breast enhancing foods. The fruit is rich in phytoestrogens (much like soybeans).
As a matter of fact, a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables is recommended not just for your breasts – it’s essential for your overall health. Research has shown that combined with regular exercise, it can help reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Nuts – Especially Walnuts and Pine Nuts
Nuts are rich in vitamins and minerals, as well as essential proteins that help maintain healthy skin and blood. Eat nuts to help keep the breasts “perky”.

Macrolane Registry
June 14th, 2010 by alissa
Q-Med is currently developing a registry in the UK to monitor their product Macrolane, a hyaluronic acid filler product that was approved in the country last year as a form of nonsurgical breast augmentation. Even though Macrolane has already been approved by the government, the registry is being set up as a commitment to the safety and welfare of patients and consumers. The results of treatments and trends will be included to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the product.
Q-Med is also conducting further research to not only improve technique, but also to examine how it holds up to other methods of breast augmentation. For example, a study currently underway compares the results achieved through fat transfer and Macrolane in patients undergoing breast reconstruction.
Macrolane was approved in the UK and the EU in 2008. It has not been approved by Health Canada or the FDA for breast augmentation and has received somewhat mixed reviews in the media. An estimated 3,000 procedures across Europe have been performed up to this date, only by physicians certified by Q-Med.
The Swedish biotechonlogy company Q-Med first gained fame for creating NASHA (stabilised non-animal hyaluronic acid), a vital component of such popular fillers as Juvederm and Restylane. Their innovative product, Macrolane, can also be used for other body contouring procedures, such as augmentation of the buttocks and calves.

Awake Breast Aug
May 28th, 2010 by alissa
Breast augmentation is commonly performed under general anesthesia, which means that the patient is sleeping for the duration of the actual surgery. However, there is another technique that allows patients the ability to remain awake during surgery.
Instead of general anesthetic, a sedative and anesthetic fluid is administered instead. The anesthetic fluid is injected into the breast area to numb it.
Proponents of Awake Breast Aug say that the benefits are the following:
The patient can see what’s going on, and change their mind about size, choosing to go smaller or larger.
The risks related to general anesthesia are eliminated.
The tumescent anesthetic fluid facilitates dissection, allowing breast tissue to be more gently separated.
The anesthetic numbs the breasts for up 8 hours following surgery.
On the other hand, there are concerns regarding this technique:
Some physicians believe that despite using local rather than general anesthetic, it is still not “safer”. Such risks as bleeding and bruising may be more probable and more difficult to control during surgery, according to clinical reports.
Patients may find it unnerving or downright disturbing to remain awake.
Awake Breast Aug is not recommended for incisions placed in the belly button (transumbilical).
Making decisions during surgery is frowned upon, since the patient’s thought processes may be compromised. All decisions regarding size and placement should be made prior to surgery, when the patient is totally conscious and is able to reason.
Awake Breast Aug is an alternative to common breast augmentation, but still remains not as popular. Could it be too gruesome? What do you think?
