Here’s another post about stats around the world, but this time it’s not for breast augmentation, but breast reduction.

According to non-profit organisation, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, not only has the number of cosmetic surgical procedures performed in the UK increased from 2008 (36,482 compared to 34,187 in 2008), the number of men undergoing surgery has increased as well – dramatically, as a matter of fact.

Smaller, not Bigger
In 2009, the number of men getting breast reduction (the opposite of breast augmentation) rose 80%, almost doubling the total number of procedures in 2008. Out of the 3,623 total cosmetic procedures performed on men last year, there were 581 reported breast reduction surgeries.

Men who have abnormally large breasts suffer from a condition called gynecomastia. Gynecomastia tends to appear around the time of puberty, remaining temporarily. Other causes include disease, obesity, and hormonal imbalances. The appearance of enlarged breasts is created by excess tissue/fat settling in the area.

Male breast reduction can be treated with medication or, if the condition is due to excess fat settling in the chest (referred to as pseudo-gynecomastia), liposuction may be a viable solution.

For the Ladies
And going smaller wasn’t just popular with the men. For women, breast reduction surgery rose by 17% over 2008. However, breast augmentation still remains the most popular procedure, even when combining the total procedures performed on women and men overall, totaling 8,565 in 2009.

The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, a professional medical society, released the results of an interesting survey last week. It seems that the public perception of cosmetic surgery has improved, with 71% of respondents to the survey saying that society’s perceptions of the industry have improved over the last 5 years. This means that cosmetic surgery has probably become more acceptable than it was before, allowing more individuals to become more comfortable with the idea of getting a procedure done themselves. Popular television shows like Nip/Tuck and Dr. 90210 show are an indication of such social trends, and although Heidi Montag is currently suffering a bit of a backlash for admitting to undergoing 10 cosmetic surgical procedures in one day (including liposuction and a revision breast augmentation), it shows that even the celebs are ‘fessing up.

What is surprising from the results is that breast augmentation was the most accepted invasive cosmetic procedure, voted by 42.4% of those surveyed. Facelift was a close second at 32.2%, with tummy tuck following at 32.1%.

Admittedly, the survey examined public perceptions of respondents in the US. However, results are probably similar to what would be found in Canada, since the cosmetic surgery industry is thriving here. The number of people who undergo Invasive cosmetic procedures have been shown to increase annually.

There are many women that are not happy with the size of their breasts. As breasts are popularly perceived as a key aspect of femininity, most would prefer that they were larger.

A Bigger Bust: From Creams, lotions, pills…?

There’s a lot of stuff out there to help you increase the size of your breasts. Marketed for breast enlargement or breast augmentation, does any of that stuff really work? Well, it may, but their ingredients could also pose a serious risk to your health.

Most remedies claim to increase bust size by stimulating the body to release natural hormones. Beware that this upsets the natural balance of hormones in the body. Stimulants are derived from organic ingredients, such as herbs, or from a chemical and synthetic blend. These hormones contribute to the development of fatty tissue in the breasts, which make them grow over a short or long period of time – the exact length of time cannot be predetermined or guaranteed, as it depends on an individual’s body and how it reacts to the remedy. However, as most tend to be taken without medical supervision, this could be dangerous or may not even work for some women. Further, the actual increase cannot be measured; as a result, the desired size may not be achieved (it may be smaller or larger than what you hoped for).

Unpredictable growth, lack of medical supervision, lengthy waiting time before results (if any) appear. This doesn’t sound good for women who want to increase their bust size. The cosmetic surgical procedure, breast augmentation, may be a better solution.

Breast Augmentation and Cosmetic Surgery

Compared to those magical potions and pills, breast augmentation by cosmetic surgery is a better solution to those who prefer more dependable results. Because you are able to choose the size of breast implants, you’ll be able to predict the size of your breasts following surgery better. Each step, from consultation to preparing for the surgery, to recovery and even long after, are all monitored by an experienced physician and cosmetic surgeon. As a result, you’ll be in a better situation and won’t be alone to handle any unexpected surprises if they happen to occur, at a much faster rate.
