Breast Reconstruction Options
As a patient of Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute, you’ll be able to explore a variety of options for your breast reconstruction because Dr. Jugenburg pursues a professional and personal quest to remain current with all breast reconstructive techniques:
Breast Implants (Two Stage Technique)
Breast Implants (Single Stage Technique)
Latissimus Dorsi Myocutaneous Flap
TRAM (Transverse Rectus Abdominis Myocutaneous) Flap
Free Flaps (DIEP, SIEA, SGAP, TUG)
Nipple Reconstruction
Single-Stage Breast Reconstruction Technique
The newest and most advanced development in breast reconstruction is the single-stage technique. This technique features a specifically-designed implant that expands the tissue – however unlike traditional expanders that make removal necessary, single-stage implants do not require removal and can be left in place, so additional follow-up surgery is unnecessary. The single-stage technique reduces the risk that additional surgery poses to the patient.
Fat Grafting Technique
Another recent technique in breast reconstruction is fat grafting. In this technique, fat is taken from a part of the patient’s body and used to rebuild the breast, correct minor deformities as well as treat and deliver rejuvenating stem cells to post-radiation tissues.
Nipple Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction recreates the breast mound. After this, a subsequent procedure may be arranged to recreate the nipple and areola as well. Nipple reconstruction is usually performed some time after the breast has been recreated. Doing so allows the new breast to “settle in”, enabling a better positioning of the new nipple/areola to create the most natural-looking result.
Balancing Procedures
Balancing procedures refer to any surgery that creates symmetry between the reconstructed and natural breast. A variety of procedures may be performed to achieve symmetry, such as mastopexy or augmentation of the natural breast.
You may discuss your options with Dr. Jugenburg, who will explain the benefits to you obtained from each technique and detail which one is the best for you to achieve the most natural and normal result possible.
