Silicone Implants for Boob Jobs

In October 2006, Health Canada made a controversial move and lifted restrictions on the use of silicone implants for the public. Prior to this time, silicone implants for breast augmentation, informally known as a boob job, had only been available to a specific number of people in Canada, under the strict supervision of medical professionals since 1992.

The move dramatically changed the field of cosmetic surgery, providing a new type of implant for boob jobs that is now considered far superior in its aesthetic than its saline counterpart.

Silicone implants are not what they once were. Today's silicone implants have been adapted by breast implant manufacturers to mimic the natural feel of the breast, and features safety precautions that drastically reduce the risk of leakage and the related adverse health effects. The filling of these implants is typically made of a silicone that is in cohesive gel form. If the shell is ruptured, the filling does not run; rather, it simply stays intact. While replacement is still necessary in the event of rupture, there are relatively no adverse side effects related to its "leakage". This cohesive gel implant, available in a variety of shapes and sizes, is typically referred to as a "gummy bear" implant because of its texture.

While Health Canada has approved silicone implants for the public, it is monitoring their usage closely. There are guidelines that must be followed if a physician decides to offer silicone implants for a client's boob job. Some important ones include the following:

*Patients must be made aware that no breast implant is good for life, which includes saline implants as well.

*Manufactures of breast implants must submit a report on their products every year. This report must include findings from research as well as reports submitted by healthcare professionals on their use.

*A national breast implant registry will be set up by Health Canada in order to monitor the effectiveness and safety of boob jobs across the country.

Dr Brian Rinker, a plastic surgeon at the University of Kentucky had so many women coming in to him complaining “I want to fix what breastfeeding did to my breasts,” that he decided to do a study to find out whether breastfeeding really had anything to do with “the sag.” What he discovered was truly remarkable. Breastfeeding has nothing to do with the sagging of breasts.

What did take a toll, he found out, was age and the effect of smoking. Smoking breaks down elastin in the skin and causes it to lose it’s youthful appearance. So if you want to keep your perky breasts you’ve got to kick that nasty habit.

When Jane Seymour got the role of playing a wealthy society lady who ends up having a topless scene with Owen Wilson (20 years her junior) in Wedding Crashers, she just couldn’t turn it down. But she couldn’t figure out a way to make it work. In comes the knife. She admits it was an excuse to get it done. But is now torn about the decision. Her implants were so small they had to be custom ordered and specially made. Kind of makes you wonder if they were worth it. Do you need the extra silicone in your body or would a lift do the same thing? Nonetheless she’s got them now. But she’s said she’s holding off on anymore plastic surgery until it becomes more “natural” looking. I think I have some pictures I could show her that might change her mind…

Debunking some breast augmentation myths

There are a number of myths associated with breast implants. Everything from breast implants saving a woman’s life to grave robber’s finding silicone bags in caskets. What’s fact and what’s fiction? Well here are a few things that will help set the record straight:

1. Breast implants DO NOT increase the risk of breast cancer.

A committee at the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found evidence that breast implants don’t cause breat cancer or the recurrence of breast cancer. However it’s still essential that you undergo routine screening for breast cancer.

2. Breast implants DO NOT weaken your immune system.

When your body detects something foreign in your system, such as a virus or bacterium, it responds by kicking your immune system into high gear. However, the IOM found no evidence to suggest this happens with breast implants. Nor did it find evidence linking implants to any autoimmune or connective tissue disorder.

3. Breastfeeding IS safe.

Your breast milk could absorb some of the silicone from breast implants but in an amount that's not considered harmful to your baby. Because breast milk is the best thing you can feed your baby, the IOM encourages women with breast implants to breastfeed if they're able to do so.

4. Are SILICONE breast implants safe?

In 1992, FDA Commissioner David Kessler warned about the possible dangers of silicone gel filled implants. As a result, use was restricted to patients in clinical trials of breast reconstruction after cancer surgery. Kessler was careful to point out that the ban was not because implants had been found dangerous, but because the manufacturers had not proved them safe. The rest of the world followed suit but within 2 years nearly every other country except the United States had relaxed the restrictions. This began the slow process of running serious studies on the safety of breast implants. The first study from the Mayo Clinic found no association between breast implants and twelve connective tissue diseases. Several other epidemiologic studies also failed to find a connection. In November 2006, that restriction was lifted when the FDA concluded that silicone implants were not associated with any underlying diseases, making them equally as safe as saline.

5. Yes you CAN go scuba diving or fly in airplanes after having breast implants.

The question is really what happens to an implant in an area of high or low atmospheric pressure. Experiments to test these situations have been performed. At high altitudes the implants expanded, but it occurs at too high an altitude for a person to live and the expansion is not enough to cause it to explode. Therefore there is no risk of a breast implant exploding inside of a living person. The reverse condition has also been tested and no examples of implants exploding or breaking have been noted during scuba diving.

6. Was a woman’s LIFE really saved by her breast implants?

True Fact. An Israeli woman’s breast implants saved her life when she was wounded in a Hezbollah rocket attack during Israel’s war with the Lebanese group. Doctors found shrapnel embedded in the silicone implants, just inches from the 24-year-old’s heart.

7. Grave robber’s find silicone bags in caskets.

Disintegration of the tissues of the body will occur much faster than the silicone in breast implants. Future societies will find many artificial objects in caskets, including metal pacemakers, ceramic hip joints, Gortex arteries and a myriad of small items such as surgical staples, screws and nails.

I’d never considered cosmetic surgery. Well, I’d never considered it until I heard about Argentina. The elegant country with a European-flavored sophistication, stunning natural wonders, and a passionate culture, which just happens to have a little sumthin’ sumthin’ goin’ on on the side that’s made me want to sign up for a visit ASAP. It’s called “the boob-job boom.”

It all began after the 2002 financial collapse of the country and its currency devaluation. It became so inexpensive to visit Argentina that tourists flocked to the area. One of the industries that arose out of this was Medical Tourism.

Now tourists are drawn to the country by the droves as they seek out travel packages that include flight, accommodations, and COSMETIC SURGERY at incredibly reasonable prices. A facelift that might cost $15,000 in that States might cost approximately $5,000 in Argentina. (By the way, those are prices that would make me consider surgery that I probably wouldn’t need.)

Argentina is in the world's top ten countries by number of surgeries. "They find the best specialists in Cali, the latest scientific advances in plastic surgery and highly competitive prices. So we receive more than 100,000 patients per year," said Gladis Barona, director of the National Commerce Federation. And with what they offer I’m 100% a convert. If only for the fun of it. I’d get to vacation in fabulous Argentina (home of the sultry tango) with flight and accommodations included, and who cares that I’ll throw in a little “work” while I’m enjoying my breezy vacation. For $5000 that can’t be beat.

When you think “bust line” you don’t generally think “Oprah.” But her corporate team obviously does excellent research as Oprah recommended the Le Mystere Tisha Bra as her favorite bra and now it’s my favorite too. It lifts, it holds, and it is completely seamless (ie, invisible). And never forget that an attractive bust line starts with the bra.

Once you’re gently lifted and held in place by a magical force unknown to man, you have to remember that every body shape is different. So make the decision: is your bust smaller or larger? Now it’s time to dress to impress.

Think of yourself as a canvas and your clothing as the paint and you’re about to create a beautiful painting. If your bust is large it is generally more flattering to wear a v-neck or a scoop neck as it breaks up the chest area and draws the eye away from the bust (which would seem like the WRONG thing to be doing, but actually it’s the RIGHT thing to do geometrically). If your bust is small you want to wear a boat, jewel, or even a higher neckline. These broaden the shoulders and create the illusion of a larger bust.

Those are the rules. Good bra. Think geometry. And a little magic always helps.

Breast augmentation surgery: Subglandular Placement

Ever wonder what exactly happens during a breast augmentation procedure? Well, this is a step-by-step account of what happened during one typical breast enhancement procedure, featuring a periareolar incision and subglandular placement of implants. The physician performing the procedure was Dr. Behnaz Yazdanfar at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic.

The surgical room is cleaned and sterilized thoroughly. After the patient is placed under general anesthesia, the chest area is isolated and sterilized. Sterility is vital to prevent infection. A diluted solution containing lidocaine is injected into specific areas of the chest to minimize bleeding. An incision is made partially around the edge of the areola from 3 to 7 o’clock. Because it is ideal for the resulting scar to be as discreet as possible, the incision should be placed right in the area where the areola meets the paler skin on the rest of the body.

Gently pushing the areola and nipple aside, space is made in the breast tissue to accommodate the implant. Then, to ensure that the positioning and the created space are adequate, a “sizer” is inserted and filled with fluid to the desired volume (a sizer is an empty implant shell). At this time, any odd indentations appearing in the breast, particularly in the inframammary fold, are also corrected. It is important that the size fit correctly before the real implant is placed.

Once this is completed, the sizer is removed and the cavity is wiped with gauze to ensure there is no bleeding. Minor bleeding is stopped with a cauterizer. An antibiotic is administered in the cavity and the implant is inserted. In this case, the implant was a round cohesive gel type.

Again, the positioning of the implants is checked to ensure optimal results. A subcuticular stitching technique is performed using monocryl dissolvable sutures to close the incisions. Once they are dressed, the actual procedure is completed and the patient is taken to another room for recovery.

Inventory of the instruments and gauze is taken intermittently throughout the procedure.

Joing The Army for New Boobs

Although the Australian Defence Department has denied that two women got $10,000 breast implants at taxpayers expense, defence minister Brendan Nelson has called an urgent briefing to investigate the incident.

So if you have a hankering for some danger and to see the world, maybe the army is a great way to pay for those new girls you've always wanted. Go ahead, let them be all that they can be in the US army.

We are kidding of course but the fact that the US army is probably paying for breast implants shows how prevalent the procedure has become.

Stunning Hollywood actress Charlize Theron has admitted that her boob are sagging. In a recent interview she states:

“I’m 32 and as you get older, you get wrinkles and your boobs sag. You get wisdom too so it’s not all bad.”

She's not quite ready to go under the knife but only time will tell if the pressures of Hollywood will be to much to withstand:

“You can’t really do anything about ageing. Some people have Botox, and that’s great. Hopefully I’ll be okay with not getting Botox, but who knows?”

Demi Moore sporting more than $600,000 worth of work

We all knew that Demi Moore had breast implants by the spectacular pair she's sporting but, who knew that she has had more that $600,000 worth of work done?

The Associated Press has reported that Demi Moore spent more than $600,000 on cosmetic surgery procedures. In addition to the breasts, she is reported to have had collagen injections, liposuction and a $12,000 procedure to lift sagging skin around her knees. Sagging knees? Who knew those were a problem for the 44 year old actress. Whatever she's doing is obviously working because she look great.

Posh Fesses Up

Victoria Beckham, the former Spice Girl known as Posh, has confessed that she had breast augmentation on her recent show Victoria Beckham: Coming to America. The comment was more of a slip up, referring to her recent experience of throwing the first pitch at a Dodgers baseball game.

Can't afford a boob job but really want one? There have been a number of companies offering free boob jobs recently, proving that this cosmetic surgical procedure has become more widely accepted than before.

A quick search on any major search engine under "boob job contest" shows pages and pages of websites offering the chance to win free breast augmentation. The reliability of some of these websites remains questionable.

And even hospitals are getting in on the action! Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital in South Africa is doing it this summer to raise funds and awareness to fight breast cancer and support a baby sanctuary. Contestants may choose between breast augmentation or a breast lift (mastopexy).

But there has been some controversy surrounding this. Fat transfer, once considered unsuitable for breast augmentation because of the body's ability to reabsorb the fat, may now be successful with a new technique designed by the American company, Cytori Therapeutics.

The new breast augmentation technique, called "Celution", essentially takes the fat stem cells from fat so that they can be reinjected into the breasts. Doing so promotes growth of tissue over a period of time (about six months), thereby augmenting the size of the breasts with more natural looking and feeling results than silicone or saline could ever achieve. The fat can be taken from other parts of the body that have high fat deposits, such as the stomach, thighs and buttocks by liposuction.

The technique is still in its clinical testing and research stage. Successful results were achieved in Japan, by 19 women so far. If all goes well, the company hopes to make it available to the public by 2008.

Circumcision

Circumcision, once a common practice amongst the majority of the American population, is being compared to breast augmentation.

Once perceived as a necessary surgery for boys in the first stage of life based on religious and hygenic reasons, circumcision is now considered by some to be as an optional procedure much like breast augmentation. Many parents across the US no longer believe that religion can justify its "barbarian" nature. Medical professionals also believe that there is insufficient evidence to support the routine practice of circumcision, despite claims that it prevents urinary tract infections and STDs.

The whole practice is slowly proving to be passe, evident by a steady decrease since the 1950s (when about 90% was still doing it!). Plus, many insurance companies no longer offer insurance coverage for the procedure, making it more like an unnecessary expense for some.

A Brief Evolution of Silicone and Saline Breast Implants

Breast implants available today are filled with either a saline solution, much like what it naturally present in our bodies, or a silicone gel. In a shell made out of silicon elastomer, both are available to any woman interested in improving their body contour by surgically enlarging their breasts.

First Came Silicone....

Silicone gel implants were designed before their saline counterparts, back in the 1960s. The first woman to receive silicone implants was in Texas, back in 1962. At the time, implants were quite firm and did not feel as natural as today's models. They also had short lifespans, rupturing quite quickly after implantation and resulting in serious health complications. After years of research and study, as well as being approved for use in 1976 by the FDA, they were banned later in 1992. The FDA cited potential health risks as the reason.

Then Came Saline...

Saline implants were designed almost a decade after silicone implants, in the early 1970s. Though they were perceived with suspicion at first, they were gradually accepted as a viable option for breast enlargement. Approval by the FDA occurred in 2000. Saline, as a filling, was not considered a problem. This was because even after an implant ruptured, saline entering the body was not as detrimental as silicone. Further, any rupture resulted in rapid deflation of the implant, allowing the patient to quickly remedy the problem. Rather, it was the sac in which it was held that posed a problem. As a result, the sac has been designed and redesigned over the years to what it is now today: a durable, three layered and pliable silicone elastomer that can have a textured or smooth surface.
