Synopsis

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, not only decreases breast size but also enhances their shape and lift, resulting in rounder, lighter, and more balanced proportions. This procedure can relieve discomfort, improve function, and boost confidence. Many of our patients find breast reduction to be transformative, as it greatly enhances both their health and overall comfort.

Benefits of a Breast Reduction?

Large breasts can cause pain, skin irritation, and limit physical activity. Many women feel a reduction would improve body balance and support an active lifestyle.

Difficulty Fitting Into Clothing

Larger breasts make finding well-fitting clothing and supportive bras challenging, often limiting comfort and fashion choices. Breast reduction can provide relief and expand wardrobe options.

Back, Neck & Shoulder Pain

Heavy breasts strain the back and neck and can cause painful shoulder indentations from bra straps. Breast reduction often relieves these issues, leading to high patient satisfaction.

Disproportionate Body configuration

Disproportionately large breasts can impact self-image, especially in teenagers and young women who may feel self-conscious in swimsuits or fitted clothing. Breast reduction helps create balanced, symmetrical proportions, improving confidence.

Discomfort In Physical Activity

Large breasts can make sports and physical activities uncomfortable and limit movement, often causing women to avoid them. Breast reduction can relieve this discomfort, allowing for easier movement and a more active lifestyle.

What is the Sleeve Gastrectomy?

What is a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery reduces breast size and weight while reshaping them for a more lifted, rounded appearance, providing both physical comfort and aesthetic enhancement. Surprisingly, it's one of the most commonly performed plastic surgeries, reflecting its popularity and the high satisfaction rates among patients who experience significant relief and improved body balance.

Anchor or "Wise Pattern"

Incisions:
- In the Vertical Pattern technique, incisions are made in the following areas of the breast:

  • Around the areola in a circular pattern
  • Vertically from the areola down to the breast fold
  • Horizontally along the breast fold

Results:
- The Anchor technique provides the most substantial lift and reshaping of the breasts, making it ideal for patients needing a significant reduction.

Lollipop or “Vertical Pattern”

Incisions:
- In the Vertical Pattern technique, incisions are made in the following areas:

  • A circular incision around the areola
  • A vertical incision extending from the areola to the breast fold

Results:
- The Vertical technique reduces breast size with fewer incisions. Your surgeon will assess your anatomy to choose the best approach for optimal results.

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia, where excess skin, tissue, and fat are removed, and the remaining tissue is lifted, reshaped, and centered. The nipple and areola are repositioned, with the option to reduce areola size. For added support, deep sutures are placed within the tissue, creating an "internal bra" to maintain shape. Finally, bandages are applied to the incisions.

To enhance the result, your surgeon may perform liposuction to contour the breast and remove excess fat from the sides of the chest and under the armpit, which are not covered under OHIP. After surgery, patients can leave the recovery room within 1-2 hours and will have a follow-up with the SixSurgery team the next week. The full procedure usually takes around 2 hours, depending on the specific requirements.

Recovery Process

First 48h:

There may be swelling, utilize pain medications.

Week 1:

You will be able to gte back to work.

Week 3-4:

The swelling and bruising goes down.

Week 6:

You may resume regular exercises.

3-6 Months:

You should be fully healed.

Surgery Complications and Risks

Complications following a Breast Reduction are uncommon; the following risks may occur:

01
Infection

Infections are very uncommon but can happen, which can result in needing antibiotics and/or drainage for the treatment. In very rare cases, surgery may be needed for a severe infection.

02
Bleeding

Although bleeding is rare, blood clots can form underneath the skin which may need to be drained. If severe, hospitalization and a blood transfusion may be necessary.

03
Wound dehiscence

Wounds can open, but they usually heal on their own. This may be linked to a reduced blood supply to the skin, known as skin necrosis.

04
Skin Irregularities

If skin irregularities occur they may be resolved by a simple massage or over time. If these lumps, hardness, or dimpling remain, other treatment methods may be required

05
Hernia

No one has perfectly symmetrical breasts, and it’s important to understand that surgery won’t make both breasts identical. In some cases, the procedure may even make an existing asymmetry more noticeable.

06
Outpatient nursing

You may need to seek nursing at your closest clinic to assist with wound care

07
Numbness

A hernia may be discovered during surgery and could require repair, which carries a risk of potential injury to the bowel.

08
Dizziness

In the first week following an abdominoplasty, you may experience dizziness especially when standing up from sitting or lying down. In this case, take care while driving or walking until it goes away.

09
Abnormal scarring

It is possible to abnormal scarring, but is rare.

10
Deep Venous Thrombosis

Deep venous thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and fat embolism are potential risks that may arise.
