Synopsis

Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction, is a procedure to address enlarged breast tissue in males. When glandular tissue becomes swollen and overdeveloped, this condition is known as gynecomastia.

The surgery may involve liposuction to remove excess fat or excision to remove glandular tissue and skin. Usually done under anesthesia, recovery typically allows a return to normal activities within about a week.

Why Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, is designed to reduce male breast size, creating a flatter, more contoured chest.

While some men choose pectoral implants to enhance chest size, those opting for gynecomastia surgery seek to remove excess breast tissue for a smoother look. Many patients report that gynecomastia affects their confidence and causes emotional discomfort, often leading them to avoid certain activities or intimacy.

At SixSurgery, we address excess tissue and skin, helping create a flatter, more defined chest.

Certain Medications may cause Gynecomastia:

  • Epilepsy drugs
  • Chemotherapy drugs
  • Antiandrogen medications
  • Antianxiety and antidepressant medications
  • Heart medications
  • Tee tree or lavander infused products
  • Steroids
  • Ulcer medications

What to Expect?

Consultation

The process starts with an initial consultation with the SixSurgery team, where you can discuss your goals and expectations for gynecomastia reduction, ask questions, review your medical history, and go over any medications.

The team will provide personalized recommendations based on your needs and desired outcome. You'll also have the chance to tour our state-of-the-art facility at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel and meet the supportive staff who’ll be part of your care team.

Surgery: Anesthesia and Scarring

Gynecomastia reduction is performed under either local anesthesia with IV sedation or general anesthesia, based on your specific needs, which the SixSurgery team will discuss during your consultation.

Using a minimal-scarring technique, the team makes a small incision near the armpit, inserting a specialized cannula. This tool loosens the fat with back-and-forth motions, allowing it to be suctioned out effectively.

Results

For a successful outcome, it’s important for patients to have some skin elasticity, allowing the skin to conform to the chest’s new contour as it heals. In cases of low skin elasticity, often seen in older patients or those with very enlarged breasts, additional skin excision may be necessary.

The incision is then bandaged, and an elastic bandage or support garment is applied to reduce swelling and support healing. A small drain may be placed under the skin to remove any excess fluid.

Recovery Process

After gynecomastia reduction surgery, some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are expected, manageable with prescribed pain medication. Compression garments or elastic bandages may be needed for a few weeks to reduce swelling and help the skin adjust to the new chest contour. Although results are visible almost immediately, final outcomes will take a few months as swelling subsides.

Most patients can return to work or school within 2-3 days, resume light exercise after 2 weeks, and fully return to all activities in about a month. Swelling and bruising will gradually fade over several weeks.

Scarring

The SixSurgery team uses a minimal-scarring technique for gynecomastia surgery, leaving a discreet scar instead of the typical incision around the nipple. This advanced approach offers:

- Faster recovery
- Smaller, hidden scars
- Enhanced cosmetic results
- Reduced risk of post-surgery bleeding

The procedure involves a small incision near the armpit, ideal for breast enlargement primarily due to excess fat. This technique can also remove glandular tissue using specialized cannulas designed for gynecomastia surgery.

FAQ
How should I prepare for surgery?
There’s no special preparation, but it’s important to quit smoking beforehand as it can hinder healing. The SixSurgery Team will review your medications and may advise pausing certain ones.
Am I a good candidate?
Healthy men with large breasts not caused by medication side effects are good candidates for gynecomastia reduction. Candidates should also have a stable weight and settled breast development.
What is the duration of the procedure?
It can take around 1 -2 hours.
How long is recovery time?
There will be some swelling, but most patients can return to work or school within 2-3 days. Mild exercise is typically allowed after 2 weeks, with full activity resuming around one month.
Will the procedure be painful?
There will be some discomfort following the surgery, which can be managed with the pain medicine prescribed by The SixSurgery team. It should diminish after the first few days.
How does the surgery work?
A small incision near the armpit allows a cannula to break up and suction out fat. Drains may be used to reduce fluid buildup, and a compression garment will help minimize swelling.
Are there any risks associated with the gynecomastia reduction?
As with any surgery, there are some risks, including bleeding, infection, swelling, and blood clots, though these are rare. Our state-of-the-art operating suite and SixSurgery team's protocols work to minimize these risks and prevent complications.
